Singlet: Term used by some members of the multiple community to describe someone with one or fewer personalities. Also known as singleton or, less commonly, monomind.
Sniglet: Any word that doesn't appear in the dictionary, but should.
We personally can't stand the term "singlets." We say "singletons." We first heard the term "singlets" many years ago from so-called "natural multiples," who at the time were very dismissive of trauma-based multiplicity.
It's our baggage and we take responsibility for it, but we just have to get this off our chest. We aren't telling anyone to change their terminology, but we are clarifying ours. We will continue to use the word "singletons."
We don't mean to imply that "natural multiples" invented the term "singlet." We simply mean that this was where we first heard it. We've also heard it used by multiples ("natural" or trauma-based) who politicize their multiplicity to the point of creating divisions within the multiple community. This is another hot button for us. We as a community have enough to deal with in mainstream society without turning against each other.
Who actually started using the term "singlets," we don't know. But it wasn't us, and it never will be.
