To Whom Am I Speaking?, 12/16/17

by Allegra

Dear B1,

That was me.

We're glad that you called to ask how things are going.  Considering B2's Geek Squad redux, it was an accomplishment to get through the day without anyone getting triggered.  Even Rachel behaved.

Same problem as before.  Take note:  Avast has bought CCleaner, and installing or updating CCleaner also installs Avast unless you choose custom install and uncheck a box.  And that option doesn't necessarily appear if you're updating CCleaner rather than installing it for the first time.

The problem is, when uninstalling Avast, the uninstaller sometimes leaves traces behind that can't even be removed when logged on as Administrator.  And Geek Squad couldn't resolve it over the phone the first time.  So we had to go back there in person.  But first we (successfully) uninstalled CCleaner, which is nice to have but not necessary.   At least we now know what caused the problem.

Today's Geek did the same thing that the Geek did on the previous visit, but there was an additional complication this time.  For some reason there were now traces of BitDefender on B2's PC, even though we've never installed BitDefender, and it doesn't show up in the list of installed programs.  A $40.00 quick fix turned into having to leave the machine there overnight.

Since the necessary diagnostics now made the repair more expensive, we ended up treating B2 to a one-year service plan, which would include this repair.  $200.00 was outside B2's budget.  The good thing is that it entitles the accountholder to service up to three devices.  Knock on wood that we won't have to do so.

And when we got home, we uninstalled CCleaner on our own machine.
