"Covert"

by Laura

Any references to "covert" on [...] forums, in our experience, means "not like Sybil." That is, most multiples work hard to fit into the singleton world and to make sure that no one in the mainstream notices any unusual behavior. The issue often comes up among multiples when discussing inaccurate media portrayals of multiplicity.

At most, we/MDs may come off to unaware singletons as being cranky, moody, flaky, snarky, or just plain weird. Or maybe that's just how we see ourselves, and we're projecting this onto others. We need to appear consistent to function in society, but we want to be authentic. And we get frustrated that we can't do both, and we end up isolating from outside people.

But we have to spend some time around outsiders in order to meet our subsistence needs. So we assume a "public" or "façade" self, which is a combination of many of us. Yet it is also really none of us. :?
